Porn sites get their own domain: ‘.xxx’

On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet’s naming system, voted to allow the application of the controversial “.xxx” top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.

The domain, which would need further approval before going live on the internet, would be applied to adult entertainment sites just as “.com” is now.

The .xxx internet suffix, which was first proposed six years ago by ICM Registry, a group that sells domain names, “will provide a place online for adult entertainment providers and their service providers who want to be part of our voluntary self regulatory community,” according to that company’s news release.

Adopting .xxx will be optional. However, some tech blogs speculate a push to make the domain mandatory for adult-only sites.

ICM Registry has already taken 110,000 pre-reservations for the domain, which could be available in early 2011, if not sooner, its news release states.

While the company says labeling adult content online “will allow for simple and effective filtering for those who wish to do so,” not everyone is pleased with ICANN’s decision to approve the domain.

Some people involved in the industry are hesitant to accept the domain, “fearing it will lead to censorship, as it would be very easy to block the entire domain instead of individual sites,” Rick Johnson of Portfolio.com wrote Thursday.

On the other hand, “some religious groups are against the creation of the domain, as it would lend more legitimacy to the adult entertainment industry,” he wrote.

Adult Straight and Gay Websites for the iPad and Their Social Implications

Despite efforts from Steve Jobs and others to keep iPorn from infultrating the Apple’s new iPad there are several gaps allowing browser based, non-Flash developed porn both straight and gay to infiltrate the market.

As more and more people pickup the iPad.  But what are the social implications of such easy access?  After-all it is the internet.  Who’s responsibility is it to keep this content from the kids who might be getting iPads as the price falls and the holidays approach?  Should Apple spend their efforts developing applications which provide safe internet browsing or simply look to ban it altogether as they have been somewhat successful in doing on the iPhone?

Porn is a 10 Billion Dollar a year industry and it’s not going anywhere.  And should it?  I’d say no!  But we do have a responsibility to keep it out of kids hands.  I challenge the right wingers to take a more liberal view of this important topic and really attack the scenario that’s a problem.  Keeping it from underage viewers and ensuring the legality and legitimacy of the Porn maker’s record keeping and content.

But whats to stop viewing porn in public; in the car? At your favorite coffee shop?  If you find yourself viewing porn in one of these places you may have a problem!   With readilty accessable porn sites for ipad such as iPad Gay Porn available at the tip of your fingertips what potential problems could arise when we leave decency in the hands of the the operator?

For now I’m glad that Apple hasn’t been able to restrict viewing; I think it’s the wrong message.  Responsibility and ensuring regulation is the right path to take.
